Dry Day is a satire brimming with profanities, political plots and Patiala pegs. However, instead of advocating a good time, it makes you wanna clean up your game, or atleast not end up an alcoholic.
Saurabh Shukla-directed Dry Day dropped on Prime Video on December 23 and the critics and netizens have a lot to say about it. Though some viewers and many critics found the film sanctimonious and ‘dry’, a majority of the viewers really enjoyed the simple yet poignant flick.
Dry Day satirizes the effects of alcohol on the life of an alcoholic, his family, as well as an entire town, resulting in the protagonist advocating for a ‘dry day’ that shall not end, aka a teetotaler town.
Based in the fictional town of Jagodhar, Dry Day traces the story of local goon Gannu, portrayed by Kota factory fame Jeetu Bhaiya, aka actor Jitendra Kumar who has also led the Prime original show Panchayat. Gannu works under Dauji, a local political leader, but dreams of becoming a ‘corporator’ aka a municipal councilor.

However, his dreams and good will are further foiled when he incurs the wrath of his mentor at a public event and decides to promote a ban on alcohol, for the entire town. But his ploy is not depriving others, instead it focuses on his personal struggle with alcohol, his ardent desire to not lose his unborn child and wife, while the rest of the town drunks make merry and continue to drink.
Starring the likes of Jitendra Kumar as Gannu, Shriya Pilgaonkar as his wife Nirmala, Annu Kapoor as the selfish political leader Omveer Singh aka Dauji, and Shrikant Verma as the liquor vendor Balwant, the film has garnered a mostly positive review from its viewers and fans.
However, critics did not find the film palatable and called it dry and tasteless, lacking in subtlety. There were few viewers as well, who found the film ‘boring’, its writing ‘pathetic’ and the performance of actors ‘just average’.
But the general consensus of ordinary, unbiased viewers was not so negative. Many found the humor on point, the social criticism relevant, and the performance of actors on point.
