Winner of 22 Grammy awards, designer of the wildly popular Yeezy fashion line, and ex-Presidential candidate Kanye West has been through a rollercoaster of a lifetime. He’s highly influential and one of America’s most celebrated rappers. So when the rumours of a documentary about his life started doing the rounds, fans were naturally electrified. As of April 2021, Kanye West’s untitled documentary has been picked up by Netflix for a colossal USD 30 million, according to Billboard.
The docuseries, which is reportedly divided into multiple episodes, will feature events from the life of West, tracing his career in the last 21 years. West has been at the centre of innumerable controversies that have sparked debates ever since he stepped into the limelight. His feud with Taylor Swift, infamous comments accusing George W. Bush of racism and debatable music video for his 2016 track ‘Famous’ have led to him receiving tremendous amounts of hate. This Netflix project will also include unseen footage like home videos and Kanye’s struggles during his mother’s death.
Kanye’s career has included some iconic albums that are still considered to be benchmarks for hip-hop music, like The College Dropout, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and The Life of Pablo. The Netflix project will be directed by Clarence Simmons and Chike Ozah, better known as Coodie & Chike who have previously worked with West on his music videos Jesus Walks (Version 3) and Through the Wire.
The announcement of this multi-episode documentary for West has come at a time of personal turmoil for the rapper. He is fighting for divorce from American socialite and businesswoman, Kim Kardashian. It is unknown if the project will cover Kardashian’s split from West or if it will include their four children.
Kanye West’s documentary is expected to hit the streaming service later this year.
