Selfiee starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi is the Hindi remake of the Malayalam hit, Driving License.
Director Raj Mehta, who is recently being hailed for helming Jugjugg Jeeyo, announced his next, Selfiee, starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi a few months ago. The movie is going to be the official remake of the Malayalam movie titled Driving Licence. The director has now opened up about the remake saying that the movie will be his own version of the original.
"I liked the film when I saw it. The premise and the core has strong emotions of a fan and a star, which I enjoyed. I have taken that and adapted it in my own way for Hindi audience. This is my version, my interpretation," he told PTI, as reported by Times of India.
Mehta said that there is pressure when a remake of a beloved movie is in the works because there will be comparisons and that more than just remaking the original, they are going to adapt it.
The director also said that Akshay Kumar suggested the movie to him after he liked it and said that he thought that the Hindi audience would love a movie because of its strong story and narrative.
Driving License, written by the late Sachy and directed by Lal Jr. came out in 2019. Starring Prithviraj and Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead, the movie revolves around the rivalry of a famous filmstar and a Motor Vehicle Inspector, after the former approaches the latter to get a driving license.
Also starring Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty, the Hindi remake has reportedly completed a large portion of its filming. The director said that they will begin post-production work after they finish filming whatever is left to be shot.
