Kannada filmmaker Pawan's first collaboration with Hombale Films did not fare well at the box office
A week ago, on June 23, Kannada filmmaker Pawan Kumar’s first Malayalam film, Dhoomam, released in theatres. A film produced by Hombale Films with Fahadh Faasil and Aparna Balamurali in the lead, Dhoomam was a highly-anticipated film based solely on the expectations attached to projects by each of the parties involved. The film, which was based on an idea that Pawan had been harbouring for over decade and could not convince actors or producers to do it in Kannada, saw the light of day only after Fahadh showed interest in the script.
Released in Malayalam and Kannada only on June 23, Dhoomam was a washout at the box office, with Mollywood audiences giving up on it completely. Kannada audiences were more kind to Pawan, as the dubbing quality had improved manifold from that in the trailer and the dialogues in Kannada were a lot better than in the Malayalam original. Dhoomam was, after all, translated from Kannada to Malayalam.

Dhoomam: OTT rights of Fahadh Faasil, Hombale’s thriller sold to this platform?
The film, we’d heard, had struck a digital rights deal prior to the theatrical release and like all Hombale Films ventures, Dhoomam too was apparently picked up by Amazon Prime Video. There’s been no official confirmation, but the latest buzz is that since the film’s box office prospects are grim, it will drop on the streamer within the 30-day mark. July 21 is the tentative date that’s being speculated for Dhoomam’s OTT premiere.
Dhoomam, which also star Vineeth, Roshan Mathew and Achyuth Kumar is a revenge thriller about the tobacco industry, including the pitfalls of addiction and passive smoking. Hombale Films had earlier stated that the Telugu, Tamil and Hindi versions of the film would release a week later on June 29, but Dhoomam’s poor reception in its Malayalam original avatar seems to have led them to scuttle those plans. All five language versions will only be available on OTT, when the film begins to stream.
