By now, it’s no secret that director Pawan Kumar’s upcoming Malayalam movie Dhoomam deals with smoking and its consequences. The movie, which will mark his debut in the industry, has Fahadh Faasil, Aparna Balamurali and Roshan Mathew in the lead and is gearing up to hit theatres on June 23.

In a recent interview, Pawan opened up about the movie and its theme. “Tobacco and smoking are very much part of the film’s theme,” he said to The Cue, adding that he doesn’t want to reveal too much about the plot at this point in time.

That said, he clarified that through his movies he has never been preachy and put across a message, asking the audience to stop their actions. “But my movies will make the audience question their own actions. I hope this film too will prompt the audience to ask the right questions,” he said.

Pawan also revealed that unlike what its trailer would have implied, Dhoomam is not a fast-paced thriller. “It’s a thriller but it’s also a drama,” he said, revealing that it has emotional moments and delves deep into each of its characters. “It progresses at the speed that its story demands.”

In an earlier interview with Money Control, Aparna, who plays the female lead in the film, said that Dhoomam, which was initially titled C10H14N2 (the chemical formula of nicotine), revolved around a couple based in Bengaluru, and touched upon the various emotional, physical and business aspects of nicotine consumption.

The film, which will also release in Kannada on June 23, has Achyuth Kumar, Anu Mohan and Vineeth, who had earlier this year shared screen space with Fahadh in Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum. Dhoomam, which also marks Hombale Films’ foray into Malayalam, will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi in the coming weeks.
