Fahadh Faasil in Dhoomam

Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil’s movie Dhoomam is special for several reasons. It marks KGF and Kantara producers’ debut production as well as Kannada filmmaker Pawan Kumar’s foray into Malayalam cinema.

The Lucia and U-Turn filmmaker had first developed the script of Dhoomam as C10H14N2 and had pitched it to several producers and actors in Kannada. With no takers, he was forced to put the script on the backburner, even though he kept improving it with time. The filmmaker finally got an opportunity to make the film, but in Malayalam with Hombale Films ready to back it.

A ‘lit’ trailer

The team unveiled the trailer of the movie on June 8 through the social media pages of its cast and crew as well as Hombale Films’ YouTube channel. The trailer hinted at a riveting suspense thriller filled with ample twists and turns, as expected from a Pawan Kumar directorial.

The trailer hints at characters resorting to methods to earn money to achieve their lofty ambitions. This also includes kidnapping, extortion, and ransom, apart from teaming with enemies with a bigger picture in mind.

A plot to keep you hooked

The movie's lead actress Aparna Balamurali in a recent interview had said that the film revolves around a Malayali couple, who live in Bengaluru. Dhoomam deals with the emotional, physical and business aspects of nicotine consumption, she said. Pawan Kumar, its director, said that while tobacco and smoking are crucial elements of the movie, it also has emotional moments between its characters, who are well fleshed out. That said, he explained, the movie isn't a fast-paced thriller but a thriller-drama that progresses at the speed its content demands.

An ensemble cast of talented actors

The film has Fahadh Faasil in the lead. National Award-winner Aparna Balamurali is teaming up with him, again after Maheshinte Prathikaaram and Roshan Mathew is working with him after C U Soon, which was an Amazon Prime Video release. Fahadh will also share screen space with Vineeth, after Pachuvum Atbutha Vilakkum earlier this year. Anu Mohan and Kannada actor Achyuth Kumar are also part of the movie in pivotal roles, with the latter dubbing in Malayalam for his character.

Hombale’s ‘mini’ budget surprise

Though the team has not revealed the budget of the movie, it’s expected to be one of the smaller releases from the Hombale stable in recent years. That said, the movie boasts high production value. It will be distributed in Kerala by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames – both of which had previously teamed up with Hombale Films to showcase the Malayalam version of KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara in the State.

Behind-the-scenes footage

Apart from a poster in May, the trailer was the first promotional material that was unveiled by the team. However, the team did have a pooja function back in October, which was also attended by KGF and Salaar director Prashanth Neel. A few days before its release, Pawan Kumar had also shared a funny snippet from the movie's shoot, where Fahadh had messed up his lines. Check it out here:
