The spy thriller, also starring Arjun Rampal, had earned less than Rs 5 crore at the box office.
Bollywood seemed to have had a string of bad luck this year when it came to the box office. Barring a select few, most films failed to make a mark at the box office, and Kangana Ranaut’s Dhaakad fell into the latter category. The spy thriller failed to live upto the hype and ultimately grossed less than Rs 5 crore at the box office. After the film’s dismal performance, rumours started to emerge that the producer, Deepak Mukut, had to sell his office to repay investors. The producer recently set the record straight on such reports.
In conversation with The Indian Express, Mukut called the rumours ‘baseless’ and ‘absolutely wrong’. He clarifies that he had recovered the maximum amount of losses already and expects to recover the rest in due course of time. He also addressed reports that the film had a hard time finding takers for its OTT release.
Calling the resorts ‘absolutely untrue’, the producer revealed that he had gotten a lot of offers from platforms for the film’s OTT release, and that he had full confidence in his project. Dhaakad had streamed on ZEE5 after its theatrical run.
On why he thought the film did not have a good run at the box office, Mukut said that Dhaakad was a film made with a lot of conviction. and added that it was ‘well made’ as well. Admitting that he did not know ‘what went wrong’ the producer said that he believed it was the audience's choice when it came to what ‘accepted’ and they wanted to watch and not watch as well. “ We(the makers) feel proud to have made a good, female-led spy action thriller, a genre less explored, with good conviction,” said Mukut. The producer bankrolled the project under the banner of Soham Rockstar Entertainment.
In addition to Ranaut, the Razneesh Ghai directorial also featured Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta and Saswata Chatterjee in pivotal roles.
