Priyanka Upendra is hopeful that Detective Teekshana becomes a franchise
When Priyanka Upendra decided to collaborate with debutant director Trivikram Raghu, it was because he was giving her the opportunity of a lifetime – to play the title role in a detective film, a genre that is more than often reserved for men. At that point, it did not play on her mind that the film, Detective Teekshana would turn out to be her milestone 50th. “It’s a stylish murder mystery, which is a new genre for me, so I am really excited to try my hand at it. Most importantly, if you look at the detective genre, it is filled with men. Yes, there maybe a Miss Marple or a Nancy Drew, but they are so few. I thought it would be nice if there is a female detective who is very smart, because women are very intuitive and intelligent. Most of these female detective or superhero characters have been in English, so bringing Detective Teekshana to Kannada would be novel for our audiences. I hope the character becomes a trendsetter in Kannada cinema,” Priyanka had told OTTplay at the time.
The film is now ready for release, in the run-up to which the team has just dropped the trailer, which shows Priyanka as Detective Teekshana trying to get to the bottom of a spate of murders. The trailer also features a lot of action, which surprised Priyanka’s husband, Real Star Upendra, who was the chief guest at the launch event. He joked that playing a detective was perfect for Priyanka, as she has a ‘nose’ for investigation, but wondered how she could pull it off, considering that she looks so good onscreen. Priyanka, meanwhile, is hopeful that Detective Teekshana will become a franchise, just like Ramesh Aravind’s Shivaji Surathkal. The makers are yet to announce a release date, but the trailer release is the first step in that direction.
