Despatch director Kanu Behl opens up about intimate scenes in Manoj Bajpayee-starrer: 'The moment you can take...'

Filmmaker Kanu Behl has spoken about the inclusion of intimate scenes in his film Despatch. The ZEE5 film stars Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role.

Filmmaker Kanu Behl's movie, Despatch, had a digital release last week on a streaming platform. Starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role, the investigative thriller is streaming on ZEE5 and OTTplay Premium. Kanu's movie revolves around the story of journalist Joy Bag who sets out to uncover the truth of a major scam. In a new interview after Despatch's release, Behl opened up about the inclusion of intimate scenes in the movie.

In Despatch, filmmaker Kanu Behl made use of physical intimacy to convey his characters' conflicting emotions. While filming such scenes is tricky, Kanu learned from his parents and actors Lalit and Navnindra Behl. Since his parents were also actors, Kanu mentioned he has a 'window' into how actors think.

"When you have such a scene, the first thing they ask is, ‘Is this necessary? Why am I doing this?’ If the only answer you can give them is that it’s a sex scene, you should cut it out from the script. But the moment you can take your actors into confidence by telling them that this is the emotion you are transacting from them, the moment you can talk about it with them, it will put them at ease," he told Mid-Day.

Kanu Behl on Manoj Bajpayee's character in Despatch

In the same conversation, Kanu spoke about portraying Manoj Bajpayee's character Joy Bag as a man who feels powerless in most areas of his life. "We wanted to do a character piece of this Faustian guy, who is fallible and has his own needs. We [asked ourselves], ‘Why is this guy trying to be a hero?’ We stumbled on this thought that heroes are born out of lack [of opportunities and justice]," added Behl.

Apart from Manoj, the star cast of Despatch includes Shahana Goswami as Shweta Bag and Arrchita Agarwaal as Prerna. The movie was released on December 13, 2024.
