Deepika Padukone to skip Project K showcase in the US amid SAG-AFTRA strike; details inside

In a big development today, popular Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone has decided to not be part of the launch of her upcoming film Project K at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in the wake of the ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA) in the USA.

A report published just a while ago in India Today reads: “Deepika is a SAG-AFTRA member and with the strike underway, the union has specified that actors cannot provide promotional or publicity services for any event. This technically extends to appearances at events such as the San Diego Comic-Con where 'Project K' will have its grand launch. In keeping with the membership regulations, Deepika will be skipping the event due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.”

On July 13, 2023, the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA went on strike over an ongoing labour dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). According to a report published by BBC, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) want streaming giants to agree to a fairer split of profits and better working conditions.

“Events including the Emmys and Comic-Con may be rescheduled or scaled back. In the industry's biggest shutdown for over 60 years, some 160,000 performers stopped work at midnight in Los Angele,” the BBC report further read.

About four days ago, even Hollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas showed her solidarity with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike through an Instagram post. Priyanka shared a post that read, "SAG. AFTRA. Strong." She wrote in the caption, "I stand with my union and colleagues. In solidarity, we build a better tomorrow."

Interestingly, Priyanka is the most-followed Indian actress on Instagram with over 88.5 million followers. Deepika Padukone (74.7 million Instagram followers) is the fourth most-followed Indian actress after Shraddha Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

Project K is the working title for an upcoming Telugu epic science fiction film written and directed by Nag Ashwin. C. Aswani Dutt produces it under the banner of Vyjayanthi Movies.
