"I didn't see Alisha as wrong or right, that's not the tonality of the film," said Deepika Padukone.
Deepika Padukone in Gehraiyaan
Deepika Padukone was recently seen in Gehraiyaan directed by Shakun Batra, on Amazon Prime Video. She plays Alisha, who gets romantically involved with her cousin Tia's (Ananya Panday) fiancé Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi).
Her character is an imperfect one leaving critics and audiences divided on whether she's likeable as well. In an interview with NDTV, Padukone spoke about Alisha, and how she actors "have to step out of the lens of judgment" to play a character like hers.
"I didn't see Alisha as wrong or right, that's not the tonality of the film. The film is not saying that oh! look here are these flawed characters and let's go on a journey with them and by the end of it dissect and decide who is right and wrong. The idea of the film is observational, that there are different kinds of people in the world. these kinds of people exist. Are we able to empathize with these characters? You don't have to agree with her choices, I don't agree with her choices," said Padukone.
Gehraiyaan also stars Dhairya Karwa, Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor. It is jointly produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Viacom 18 Studios and Batra's Jouska Films.
Meanwhile, Padukone's next project is Pathan with Shah Rukh Khan. The two have previously shared screen space in her debut Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express.
