Batman might be seen fighting crime, taking down evil ganglords and assembling a superhero team, but Gotham’s caped crusader won’t be shown in any intimate acts anytime soon in the DC universe.

An executive producer from HBO’s adult animated series Harley Quinn recently revealed how DC bosses had asked them to take out a scene of Batman and Catwoman performing a sex act, in a recent interview with Variety.

Justin Halpern, who is the co-creator of the DC animated series, said that in the third season of the show, there was a moment “where Batman was going down on Catwoman”. However, the scene had to be axed, he said. “DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone’,” said Halpern to Variety.

DC officials’ stand, however, has kicked off a storm online with fans digging deep into the comics and sharing stories of Batman’s love life.

Kevin Smith, actor, comic book writer and Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelations director, tweeted, “There was also a little pushback when we did the Green Arrow/Black Canary oral sex scenes in my run with @philhester and @andeparks 20 years ago. But my point to @DCComics editorial was 'Oliver Queen just knows how to make the ladies Quiver. Especially when he hits the bullseye.”

Harley Quinn has continuously pushed the envelope as far as adult content involving superheroes are concerned. The series also depicts the same-sex relationship between Harley and Poison Ivy and was even nominated for GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Halpern, however, did maintain that DC was extremely supportive in terms of how their characters were used in the show. The third season of the animated series is expected to drop by end of this year.
