27 years of Daud

It's been 27 years since the road adventure film Daud hit the big screen. Ram Gopal Varma directed the 1997 film, which starred Sanjay Dutt and Urmila Matondkar in the lead roles. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the audience praised the comedy sequences, particularly those that featured the lead actors alongside the late Neeraj Vora in the jungle. In case you are planning to revisit Daud you can stream the film on JioCinema, ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium), and ShemarooMe (OTTplay Premium).

Plot summary of Daud

In Daud the charming Nandu (Sanjay Dutt) is a small-time thief who takes a job to deliver a suspicious gift to Pinky (Paresh Rawal), an infamous criminal. Indignant criminals and police, who have launched a massive manhunt, quickly chase after Nandu after he demands more money because he feels his delivery fee has been underpaid. Bhavani (Urmila Matondkar), a beautiful cabaret dancer, and Nandu, her travelling companion, are shocked to discover a nuclear weapon in the package they initially believed to be gold.

Manoj Bajpayee’s role in Daud and RGV's reflection on Irrfan Khan

Manoj Bajpayee also played a pivotal role in Daud just a year before he starred in RGV's Satya and became the iconic Bhiku Mhatre. In a previous interview with Bollywood Hungama, the director faced a question about Irrfan Khan's interest in the Pushkar role he portrayed in the movie. Varma responded by saying that no one ever considered Irrfan for the role of Daud. Throughout the filming of Daud, the actor had no prior knowledge of Irrfan. He offered Bajpayee a role in Daud after seeing him in Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen.

Speaking about Irrfan, the filmmaker revealed that they met much later than Daud. They have never collaborated, and he has no idea why. This is simply another instance when nothing materialised, and now he is sorry. Together, they would have conjured a unique spell. In RGV's opinion, Irrfan was an incredibly versatile performer.

Shabba Shabba and O Bhavre were two of the film's chart-topping songs, which A. R. Rahman composed the score for.
