TJ Gnanavel's Jai Bhim revolved around police discrimination against marginalized communities.
If there is one film on which expectations were riding high at the 69th National Film Awards, it was Suriya's Jai Bhim. But fans were mighty disappointed after the film got ignored at the National Film Awards and didn't bag a single award. And just like the audience, yet another person who shared his disappointment was Telugu actor Nani.
Taking to his social media handle, Nani used a broken heart emoji along with the caption, Jai Bhim, expressing his disappointment. Nani had earlier shared in an interview that he was quite moved by Suriya's character in the film and that the film was inspiring in many ways. He added that he wished to be part of a film like that. His response came after he was asked about one character that he would have liked to play.
The court drama revolves around three men from a marginalised tribal community who are arrested on a fake theft case and are subjected to police brutality and discrimination. When one of them goes missing, his earnest wife seeks the help of an unright lawyer to find the truth. The film stars Suriya, Manikandan, Lijimol Jose, Prakash Raj, Rajisha Vijayan, Guru Somasundaram, Rao Ramesh, Jayaprakash, Ilavarasu, Elango Kumaravel to name a few.
The film is inspired from a true incident, which involved a case fought by former Justice K Chandru. While music for Jai Bhim was by Sean Roldan, cinematography was by SR Kathir editing by Philomin Raj. The film, which made its direct premiere on Amazon Prime Video on November 2, 2021, opened to fantastic reviews from critics and audiences.
A scene from Jai Bhim was listed at The Oscars' YouTube channel in the segment, Scene at the Academy. The screenplay of the film was published as a book as well, and was released at the Chennai Book Fair. Jai Bhim was bankrolled by Suriya's own production house, 2D Entertainment and Amazon Studios.
