While he’d directed Falaknuma Das, it’s this film where we truly notice his mettle as a storyteller
Das Ka Dhamki, the action thriller and the second directorial of Vishwak Sen, released amidst much fanfare for Ugadi this year. Produced by Vishwak’s father Karate Raju, the film featured Nivetha Pethuraj as the female lead while also starring Akshara Goud, Pranati Rai Prakash in special appearances. The film opened to mixed reviews from critics but put up a decent show at the box office.
After its theatrical run, Das Ka Dhamki is out on OTT. Telugu streaming platform aha acquired the post-theatrical streaming rights of the thriller and premiered the film this weekend (April 14). Rao Ramesh, Rohini Molleti, Ajay, Hyper Aadi, Mahesh Achanta, Prudhvi Raj, Murali Goud, Kadambari Kiran, Amith Sharma and others essayed supporting roles in this film as well.
There’s no doubt that Vishwak Sen as an actor is reinventing himself with every film - his evolution as an actor from Vellipomakey to Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi to recent releases like Ori Devuda, Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam has been tremendous. While he debuted as a director with Falaknuma Das, the remake of the Malayalam gangster saga Angamaly Diaries, it is with Das Ka Dhamki that he’s truly proved his mettle as a director.

Paagal-fame director Naresh Kuppili was initially on board for Das Ka Dhamki as well but the filmmaker had opted out of the project owing to creative differences with Vishwak. The latter said that he visualised the script, written by Prasanna Kumar Bezawada, differently. The story was reportedly more of a comedy initially and Vishwak gave it a new dimension with the thriller angle, packing the screenplay with riveting twists.
Although there’s an overdose of twists post intermission and the comedy works only sparingly in the first hour, Vishwak Sen always ensures the viewer is invested in the storytelling. The contrast in the characterisation of the double roles and his performance as the evil twin, in particular, are a delight to watch. The film has something for everyone - action, romance, humour, thrills and solid emotions too.
The OTT release of Das Ka Dhamki would certainly be a surprise for many in terms of Vishwak Sen’s directorial credentials.
