Director Kumaar’s film explores the perils of gambling addiction during popular cricket tournaments
Tabla Nani in Critical Keertanegalu
One of the major challenges faced by the Kannada OTT platform Namma Flix is acquisition of new content – filmmakers prefer being on the bigger, popular platforms, even if the deal is not the most lucrative. So, Namma Flix also changed its strategy; instead of hoping to onboard new films, the platform is currently focused on building its content library with slightly older titles that come to it under non-exclusive deals.
Watch Kannada Films on Namma Flix with OTTplay Premium's Simply South pack. Enjoy 20 OTT platforms streaming South content including SunNXT, aha, ManoramaMAX, ZEE5 and more at just ₹75.
You will find many of these films on, say, a Prime Video too, but if you are a member of the audience looking exclusively for Kannada film content, these titles may just be available at much lower subscription rates on Namma Flix. In recent weeks, films like Urvi, Triple Riding, Munduvareda Adhyaya, Paddehuli, etc. found a second home on the platform and the latest addition is Critical Keertanegalu.

Directed by Kumaar, who had earlier made Chemistry of Kariyappa, Critical Keertanegalu, which released in theatres in May 2022, is a cautionary tale about cricket gambling. Inspired by real-life events, Kumaar’s narrative follows four stories that are cited as examples by an advocate, as he pleads his case to get a national-level T20 cricket tournament banned.
The socio-comedy examines how betting has grown to become a widespread social menace. The argument that advocate Kariyappa (Tabla Nani) presents is that millions bet their hard-earned money on not only the final outcome, but pretty much every passing second of a match, like, for instance, runs scored in an over, wickets taken in an over, player (batsman and bowler) statistics, etc.
The betting rackets are designed to get people addicted by giving them a few wins. Confident that this lucky streak will continue, they pledge more money into the game, only to end up making massive losses that are sometimes so grave that they see no way out and take drastic steps.
When it released, Critical Keertanegalu opened to positive reviews, although it was pointed out that Kumaar does not attempt to provide a solution to the problem.
