From Fahadh Faasil’s Pachuvum Athubhuthavilakkum to Tovino Thomas’ 2018 and Neelavelicham, there’s a slew of exciting releases in April 2023
It’s not just the Vishu and Eid weekends that are packed with new Malayalam releases this time, but the entire month of April. From films of stars such as Fahadh Faasil and Tovino Thomas to comedies starring Basil Joseph and Suraj Venjaramoodu, there’s something for everyone in the festive month.
From movies of veteran filmmakers Priyadarshan and VK Prakash such as Corona Papers and Live to those of debutant directors including Irshad Parari’s Ayalvaashi, Sudheesh Gopinath’s Madanolsavam and Muhasin’s Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham, this month promises to be interesting in terms of whose content reigns supreme. Add to the mix some highly anticipated movies like Aashiq Abu’s Neelavelicham and Jude Anthany Joseph’s 2018, April promises to be a treat.

Corona Papers
Release date: April 6
Veteran director Priyadarshan’s latest Malayalam venture has Shane Nigam, Shine Tom Chacko, Gayathrie Shankar and Siddique in lead roles. The thriller, which revolves around crime and betrayal, is scripted and co-produced by the acclaimed filmmaker.

Pookkaalam
Release date: April 8
Director Ganesh Raj’s second film after Ananadam, revolves around an aged Christian couple and a rural setting. The movie has Vijayaraghavan and KPAC Leela essaying the roles of a couple who have been married for 80 years, and revolves around an incident that happens to them – which has a far-reaching impact on them as well as others around them. Vineeth Sreenivasan, Basil Joseph, Suhasini Maniratnam and Roshan Mathew are also part of the cast.
Madanolsavam
Release date: Yet to be announced
Suraj Venjaramoodu and Babu Antony team up for a fun family entertainer that is laced with humour. The film, based on a short story by E Santosh Kumar, is helmed by Sudheesh Gopinath and is set to be a Vishu release.
Live
Release date: April 12
Director VK Prakash and scriptwriter S Suresh Babu’s latest social thriller has Mamta Mohandas, Soubin Shahir, Priya Prakash Varrier and Shine Tom Chacko in the lead. The movie highlights the impact that media has on people when it intrudes into their lives.
2018
Release date: Yet to be announced
Director Jude Anthany Joseph’s multi-starrer based on the Kerala floods of 2018 will showcase a series of heroic tales from the natural disaster that wreaked havoc. Tovino Thomas, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Lal and Narain are part of this big-budget movie.

Neelavelicham
Release date: April 20
The retelling of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer’s Neelavelicham, set in the 1960s, has Tovino, Roshan Mathew, Rima Kallingal and Shine Tom Chacko in the lead. The film, helmed by Aashiq Abu, is a remake of Bhargavi Nilayam and has music composed by Rex Vijayan and Bijibal.
Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham
Release date: April 21
Basil Joseph essays the lead role in this feel-good entertainer, helmed by debutant Muhasin and scripted by Unda and Puzhu writer Harshad. The movie also has Jaffer Idukki, Indrans, Sudheesh and Johny Antony in pivotal roles.

Ayalvaashi
Release date: April 21
Writer-director Muhsin Parari’s brother Irshad makes his directorial debut with the Soubin Shahir and Binu Pappu-starrer that revolves around two neighbours who are at loggerheads. The movie also has Naslen, Nikhila Vimal and Lijomol Jose in pivotal roles.
Pachuvum Athbhuthavilakkum
Release date: April 28
Fahadh Faasil’s first theatrical release in 2023 also marks the debut directorial of Sathyan Anthikad’s son Akhil. The movie, which has been shot in Mumbai, Goa and Kochi, is a fun entertainer that also has veteran actor Vineeth in a pivotal role.
