If developed it will be the first film in the DC universe to feature a Latino superhero as the lead
Xolo Mariduena, popular for his role in the series Cobra Kai, is in talks to play the lead role in DC’s new film about the superhero Blue Beetle, reports The Wrap.
Although the original Blue Beetle made appearances in Fox Comics, DC now owns the rights to the superhero. The upcoming movie will feature Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes, the third Blue Beetle. Jaime becomes the hero when he discovers a scarab that morphs into a powerful alien suit which gives him the abilities to fight, metamorphosise and space travel as well. The third version of the hero is also known to have associations with the Teen Titans. The character has also made appearances in other animated DC movies such as Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
Filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto will reportedly develop the new film, which will come under the banner of DC Films and Warner Bros. and will also be made available to stream on HBO Max. Soto, known for helming the drama Charm City Kings, will also serve as a director on a new film in the Transformers franchise.
On Cobra Kai Xolo Mariduena stars as Miguel Diaz, the teenage neighbour of the protagonist who is inspired to set up a Dojo when Miguel asks for karate lessons. Mariduena, who made his acting debut in the series Parenthood, has also had roles in the Rush Hour TV series and on Twin Peaks. The young actor had previously expressed his desire to play Blue Beetle on his social media.
The Blue Beetle film will be the first feature-length film of DC to star a Latino superhero as the main lead.
