British filmmaker Christopher Nolan has finally got his hands on the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director which has inexplicably eluded his illustrious career. The Oppenheimer director recently revealed some of his favourite films of all time. So for today’s List Hai Toh Hit Hai podcast, we take a look at 10 of these films that you can stream online in India.

Aftersun - MUBI

Directed by Charlotte Wells, Aftersun is a 2022 drama film and it is an underrated masterpiece. The film stars Paul Mescal in the lead as a father who takes his 11-year-old daughter Sophie on a holiday in Turkey. The story is told from Sophie’s perspective about the trip that happened 20 years ago, as Sophie attempts to recollect fond memories of her loving father – a man who is struggling with personal trauma.

Foreign Correspondent - MX Player

The next film on this list is the iconic 1940 Alfred Hitchcock film, Foreign Correspondent. The plot follows John Jones, an American reporter covering a mysterious treaty between two European nations. However, he is soon caught in a dangerous conspiracy that involves an assassination. Joel McCrea and Laraine Day play the lead roles in this classic Hitchcock film.

All Quiet on the Western Front - Netflix

The award-winning 2022 German anti-war film is an adaptation of the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque. The film tells the harrowing tragedies of the trenches during the First World War from the perspective of young German soldiers, whose initial excitement to join the war quickly fades away. The film stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, and Hollywood star Daniel Brühl who is best known for playing iconic roles in Rush, Inglourious Basterds, and Captain America: Civil War.

Speed - Disney+ Hotstar

The cult classic 1994 film Speed, directed by Jan de Bont, propelled lead stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock to global stardom. The film follows a young police officer’s attempts to disarm a bomb on a local bus that will detonate if the bus drops its speed 50 miles per hour. The high-octane thriller also stars Dennis Hopper, Joe Morton, and Jeff Daniels.

Saving Private Ryan - Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play

The five-Oscar-winning World War II drama Saving Private Ryan tells the story of a group of soldiers who are tasked with rescuing Private James Ryan from behind enemy lines after the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day. The iconic Steven Speilberg film features an ensemble cast of Tom Hanks, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, and Matt Damon.

First Man - Prime Video, JioCinema

Damien Chazelle’s underrated 2018 film First Man stars Ryan Gosling in the lead as Neil Armstrong, the first man to land on the moon. The gripping biopic follows Armstrong and his crew as they prepare for the historic moment. Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott, and Ciarán Hinds play pivotal roles in the film.

Baby Driver - OTTplay Premium, Netflix

A young oddball, yet highly skilled, getaway driver is forced by a gangster to take part in an elaborate heist, threatening to harm his girlfriend if he refuses. However, the heist takes a dramatic turn for the worse. Directed by Edgar Wright, this thrilling action-packed film boasts a star-studded ensemble of Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Eiza González,  Jon Hamm,  Jamie Foxx, and Jon Bernthal.

Star Wars: A New Hope - Disney+ Hotstar

The 1977 blockbuster hit Star Wars: A New Hope is widely regarded as the film that revolutionised science fiction in Hollywood and one that paved the way for new filming techniques. Set in a “Galaxy far, far, away”, the George Lucas film follows the journey of young Luke Skywalker as he becomes the face of the resistance against the evil regime known as the Empire. The film stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and  Alec Guinness among other prominent roles. The film also spawned a franchise that continues to release films, TV shows, video games, and comic books to this day.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - OTTplay Premium

While Star Wars is historically one of the biggest releases of 1977, a Steven Speilberg sci-fi film also released that year shattering several box-office records – the alien invasion film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The plot revolves around an electric lineman, whose normal life is upturned when he stumbles upon an alien life form. This sets him on the path in search of answers as his government continues to deny the existence of extraterrestrial beings.

The Hit - MX Player, Plex

The 1984 crime drama The Hit revolves around a former gangster Willie Parker. After providing evidence against his former colleagues he has moved to Spain in the hopes of living in anonymity. However, two hitmen track him down to escort him to Paris. The narrative follows their fateful trip to Paris. The film is helmed by Stephen Frears and stars Terrance Stamp in the lead as Willie Parker.
