Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram is running riot at the Karnataka box office, with Balakrishna’s Daaku Maharaaj the new entrant, also drawing crowds
Sharan in a still from Choo Mantar
The battle for the Sankranti box office winner looks firmly in the hands of the Malayalam thriller Rekhachithram in Karnataka. The Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan led film has only a 130-shows in Bengaluru, but has been reporting nearly half of those as fast-filling/sold out in the early hours of its first Sunday. The Jofin T Chacko film, which released on January 9, has seen an upward tick in footfalls over the weekend and is said to have clocked close to Rs 1 crore from the Karnataka box office.
On Saturday morning, the top 10 movies in Bengaluru did not include any Kannada films, even though there were two new releases – Choo Mantar and Nimma Vasthugalige Neeve Javaabdaararu. This changed in the course of the day, with Choo Mantar recording 12,000 ticket sales on aggregator sites. On January 12, Choo Mantar broke into the top 10, albeit with 6 fast filling shows in the early hours, what with a new entrant – Daaku Maharaj – to contend with. The Balakrishna starrer released on January 12 and with close to 400 shows in Bengaluru is expected to be the big player for the next couple of days.
The other Kannada film, Nimma Vasthugalige Neeve Jabaabdaararu, is also reporting improved footfalls, with 4 of its 15 shows in the city showing fast-filling status as of Sunday morning. The Keshav Moorthy-directed anthology has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Both the Kannada films have not benefited from the failure of Game Changer, with the Telugu film’s shows not being allocated to either.
Ram Charan’s Game Changer does not feature in the top 10 but continues to hold over 500 shows in Bengaluru, while the re-release of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is still going strong, while Unni Mukundan’s Marco rounds off the list. The Tamil film Madha Gaja Raja has not made much of a dent.
