After Prema Desam, Narappa, Maya Bazaar, we'll have another popular film hitting screens in theatres again - Pawan Kalyan's two-decade-old release Kushi, directed by SJ Suryah. While the news of the film's re-release on December 31 was officially confirmed by its producers Sri Surya Movies this week, it has now come in the way of the re-release plans of another Chiranjeevi film Gang Leader. Now, the Vijaya Bapineedu-directorial will not release on the same day to avoid a clash with Kushi.
In an official statement released by the distributors of Gang Leader, they wrote, "Given Kushi is releasing on December 31 in theatres and it's not ideal for another film from an actor in the same family (Chiranjeevi) to release on the same day, we're postponing the re-release of Gang Leader. A new release date will be announced shortly." The film, one of the biggest blockbusters in Chiranjeevi's career also starring Vijaya Shanti, Sarathkumar, was directed by Vijaya Bapineedu and had music by Bappi Lahiri.
A 1991 release, Gang Leader, produced by Maganti Ravindranath Chowdary under Shyam Prasad Arts, also starred Rao Gopal Rao, Anandaraj, Murali Mohan. With choreography by Prabhu Deva, the film had dialogues by Parichuri Brothers, with Lok Singh handling the cinematography. Gang Leader was edited by Vijaya Bapineedu himself. The commercial success was remade later in Kannada and Hindi as Kutumba and Aaj Ka Goonda Raaj respectively. The latter also featured Chiranjeevi in the lead.
Another hit film of Chiranjeevi, Gharana Mogudu, had re-released in 2022 across Telugu states. Chiranjeevi will have two major releases in 2023, Waltair Veerayya and Bholaa Shankar. While Waltair Veerayya is scheduled for a Sankranthi release, Bholaa Shankar, the Telugu remake of Ajith's Vedhalam, is expected to hit screens in the first half of 2023 itself.
