Chhaava trailer review: Starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandannna in the lead, the Laxman Utekar directorial is set to hit the big screen on February 14.
In the corpus of period films about historic figures, another potent addition is here. For years, filmmakers have tried to bring the glorious history of the Maratha empire to the screen. Some have succeeded, while many have failed. Nevertheless, this doesn’t stop filmmakers from exploring this chapter of our history. The latest addition is Chhaava starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, where Vicky plays Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and Rashmika portrays Maharani Yesubai. After a long wait, the movie is finally set to release in theatres, and to further intensify the buzz, the makers have released the first trailer. Read on to know more about it.
The most interesting part about Chhaava directed by Laxman Utekar, is that it comes from the same creative team behind the Supernatural Universe, which includes Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya. This suggests that we might be in for more than just another biopic about a legendary king who fought wars; perhaps we’re about to experience something much deeper. The trailer offers a glimpse into a world that is opulent and grand, reflecting the massive budget that has gone into making this Vicky Kaushal starrer. What’s even more interesting is the casting of an actor who has previously established himself as the next-door boy and a dancing star. This transformation into a disciplined Maratha warrior in a period film is striking.
Laxman Utekar’s decision to bring AR Rahman on board for the film’s music and score is commendable. Rahman, who has previously worked on period films like Jodhaa Akbar Ponniyin Selvan, and Mohenjo Daro, delivers a deeply intense vibe for Chhaava, which has us all eagerly anticipating the film. Vicky Kaushal’s dedication is visible in every scene as he embodies this challenging role. Akshaye Khanna, unrecognizable, fits the role of Aurangzeb perfectly.
Rashmika Mandanna looks great and fierce in her role, but her dialect is a concern. While this is just the trailer, we hope her dialect doesn’t detract from the magic the movie aims to create. The film will inevitably be compared to the works of maverick Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has marked the genre in such a way that it’s difficult not to compare Chhaava to his stellar films. However, Chhaava seems like a film that will establish its own identity and, if executed well, should have a great box-office run and long shelf life.

For those unfamiliar, Chhaava directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under his production house Maddock Pictures, is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, who ruled from 1681 to 1689. The movie is set on a massive scale and also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, Divya Dutta as Sambhaji Maharaj’s stepmother Soyarabai, and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The new posters have already sparked excitement ahead of the trailer's release on January 22, 2025.
At the CNN News18 Indian of the Year 2024 Awards, Vicky Kaushal spoke about taking on the role of Sambhaji Maharaj, saying, "When you start discussing an opportunity like Chhaava and when it comes your way, Laxman Utekar is the director, and Dinesh Vijan is the producer. It’s the same team that worked with me on Zara Hatke Zara Bachke. Laxman Sir discussed this opportunity with me when we were shooting that film."
"The first feeling is just, will I be able to do justice to such an incredible legacy? But that’s what excites me the most. Every opportunity like this, when you get to portray a great man like Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is also an opportunity to understand their culture, their history, their values, their beliefs, and their love for the country," he added.
Chhaava is set to release in cinemas on February 14, 2025. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
