Chandramukhi 2: Anushka Shetty rumoured to play female lead in Raghava Lawrence starrer horror comedy

According to latest reports, Anushka Shetty is in talks to play the female lead in the P.Vasu directorial Chandramukhi 2. Earlier last year, the Kanchana actor Raghava Lawrence announced that will be starring in the horror comedy in a lead role.

Chandramukhi, starring Rajnikanth, Jyotika, Prabhu and Nayanthara in prominent roles, is a psychological thriller set in a haunted mansion. The 2005 Tamil movie, a remake of the Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu, starring Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobhana in lead roles, was a great hit in Tamil Nadu. Chandramukhi 2 is supposed to be a prequel focussing on flashback sequences. The movie is bankrolled by Sun Pictures.

Raghava Lawrence will be playing the role of ruthless king Vettaiyan which Rajinikanth played in Chandramukhi. Vettaiyan was shown as a lustful, barbaric yet scheming king who won’t stop at anything to get his hands on what he desires. Rajinikanth was praised for the scathing performance as a cruel king who separates two lovers and becomes the victim of the murdered court dancer’s vengeance. Raghava Lawrence, who calls himself the “greatest fan of Thalaivar” will have the honour to do his role in the sequel.

The movie was supposed to begin its shooting in May, but the schedule was postponed several times due to Raghava Lawrence’s commitment to other projects and the delay over finding a female lead. Actors like Kiara Advani, Simran and Jyotika were reportedly considered for the role but the makers seem to have zeroed in on the Baahubali actress. Anushka is known for playing historical or epic characters such as in Rudramadevi, Baahubali, Arundhati etc. so to play a classical dancer in the pre-independence period would be effortless for the actress. She was last seen in the Amazon Prime release Nishabdham, an experimental thriller movie in which she played a deaf-mute girl named Sakshi.

Meanwhile, Raghava Lawrence is currently shooting for Rudran and has announced that Chandramukhi 2 will begin filming after Rudran. He was previously seen in Kanchana 3, a horror-comedy which despite receiving negative reviews became a commercial hit.
