Mammootty’s much-awaited CBI 5: The Brain hit theatres worldwide on May 1, and despite the mixed reviews that the film garnered from critics, the investigative thriller got off to a good start.

The movie, which marks the fifth instalment in the 34-year-old CBI Sethurama Iyer franchise, was made on a big budget and now according to trade analyst, it has managed to rake it close to Rs 5 Cr, thanks to the advance bookings for Day 1.

This is in line with the box office prediction for Day 1 for the film as Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Jana Gana Mana and Sathyan Anthikad’s Makal was also released on April 28 and April 29, respectively. KGF: Chapter 2 is also playing in various theatres.

CBI 5, meanwhile, didn’t have a major release outside Kerala in the country as several big releases were lined up in other languages in respective states. The movie was not screened in cities such as Bengaluru and Mumbai, which are high revenue centres for Malayalam films. The Mammootty-starrer, however, got a big release in the Middle East where it was distributed by Truth Global Films.

The film’s first day collection still makes it the second best earning Malayalam film on Day 1 this year, preceded only by Mammootty’s Bheeshma Parvam. Both the movies had hit theatres after the Kerala government had permitted 100% theatre occupancy.

CBI 5 revolves around a series of murders called basket killings that lead to the agency taking up the case. However, it proves tough even for the master sleuth to crack. The movie also has Mukesh, Jagathy Sreekumar, Anoop Menon, Asha Sharath, Renji Panicker, Ramesh Pisharody, Soubin Shahir and Dileesh Pothan, who plays the role of Kerala chief minister.

The movie, directed by K Madhu, will be available to stream on Netflix after its theatrical run.
