Kamal Haasan is promoting his upcoming film, Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, at the 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival
At the 75th Cannes Film Festival, Kamal Haasan spoke to Film Companion about his upcoming release, Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The actor-politician is at French Riviera to promote his film, which will hit the screens by June 3. The hype around Vikram is huge as it marks Kamal Haasan's comeback to the big screen, after a gap of four years. He was last seen in Vishwaroopam 2.
Kamal Haasan was asked if there was a connection between the upcoming film and his old one, Vikram (1986). In an interview with Film Companion, he said, "Except for one incident, it's not there. I made up a story for the first Vikram, which they thought was too maverick, and it didn't have enough songs. So, when Lokesh Kanagaraj came back and said he wanted to call it Vikram, I casually shared the story. He said he liked it and wanted to develop it. But he has taken it in his way... very Quintin Tarantino-ish. You will see soon."
Kamal Haasan, candidly admitted, "Sometimes, certain good films don't get the exposure. But thanks to technology (web and net), any film with due diligence will get exposure. That's what has happened to Vikram. There are my fans online who have taken it up as if they have been told to."
Speaking about working with Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil, Kamal Haasan said, "I always think of any talent as competition; across gender. That doesn't matter. For me, the winner should be the film... At times, you might work with people where you have to babysit fellow actors. However, not with these guys. They are grownups. There's talent. I had to just take care of myself." He added, "Above all, this group of people I worked with in Vikram... they all love me. That works like a trampoline. You go higher than you possibly can."
Kamal Haasan referred to Suriya's special appearance towards the end, as an incredible one. "It's no longer a rumour now. His role might take the story further to 'part 3'."
So, does this mean, Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kaithi and Vikram belong to the same universe? Let's wait and watch!
Vikram also stars Narain, Chemban Vinod, Swathishta Krishnan, Arjun Das, Gayathrie Shankar, Harish Uttaman, and Shivani Narayanan.
During the audio launch of Vikram, Kamal Haasan said, "Theatres are here to stay regardless of what happens. A lot of talk is being made about pan-Indian cinema. I said the same thing when television was viewed as a threat to cinema. The mere fact that Venkatachalapathi appears in a calendar doesn't mean foot traffic in Tirupati decreases. Several people have been asking me to give at least one film each year. In some cases, they requested three. You never know that I may give a dozen!"
Recently, the makers of Vikram revealed the Hindi trailer of the upcoming actioner.
