R. Madhavan’s Rocketry: The Nambi Effect was chosen from India to have its world premiere at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival. The movie, after its first screening, reportedly received a 10-minute long standing ovation from the crowd.

Madhavan’s movie is based on the life and struggle of Nambi Narayanan, a former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist who was credited for developing efficient liquid fuel engines. His life turned upside down after he was embroiled in a spy controversy, which became international news. Madhvan makes his directorial debut with the film, in which he also essays the role of the scientist.

Madhavan and the real-life Nambi Narayan both walked the Cannes red carpet yesterday. The scientist was also present with the actor-director during its screening. “I’m overwhelmed and exhilarated. It’s a surreal moment for all of us at Team Rocketry! Humbled and grateful By God’s grace.Thank you for all your love and support,” Madhavan said after the screening, according to India Today.

“Just watched #Rocketrythenambieffect at Cannes ..Take a bow. @ActorMadhavan for bringing a new voice to Indian cinema #changeishere #respecttoIndianscientists (sic),” A.R Rahman wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Apart from Madhavan in the lead, the movie also features Simran, Rajat Kapoor, Ravi Raghavendra, Misha Ghoshal, Gulshan Grover, Karthik Kumar and Dinesh Prabhakar in important roles. Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya also make special appearances in the movie.

While the film got its big premiere at arguably the most prestigious film festival in the world, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect will be released in theatres on July 1, 2022. Shot simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and English, the film will also be released in Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
