The movie was announced in 2016, leaving Tamil cinephiles elated
Team Sangamitra at Cannes
Kollywood movie lovers were in for a huge surprise when the news of Sundar C directing a big budget project was out. Titled Sangamitra, the ambitious movie was supposed to be bankrolled by Thenandal Films. The announcement was made in 2016, and actors Jayam Ravi and Arya were brought on board to play lead roles.
Shruti Haasan came on board to play the female lead while AR Rahman and Sabu Cyril were assigned the job of composing music and helming art direction respectively. The project was also launched at the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival.
Later, a few sketches of Ravi, Arya and Shruti were released by the team, and movie buffs had pinned high hopes on the period flick which was said to be set in the 8th century. The pictures of Shruti Haasan getting trained in sword fighting in London to play the titular role went viral, too.
However, the actress opted out of the movie owing to reasons best known to her. Later, Disha Patani was chosen to essay the role by the team. The Bollywood actress had expressed excitement on coming on board for the film as well. But to everyone's shock, the project was put on hold.
Now, we hear that the makers are planning to revive the film with the same cast and crew. It looks like the gargantuan success of Ponniyin Selvan made the team rethink their old idea. However, the discussion regarding the project's revival is in the nascent stage.
The team's initial plan was to make the film with a budget of 200 crores and in two installments. The release issued by the makers a few years ago read "It is a story of many kingdoms, many equations, many relationships, told in an ambitious, larger than life, visually extravagant manner".
