The beloved Captain Holt of Brooklyn Nine-Nine – André Braugher passed away nearly two days ago and the fans of the police-procedural drama are still reeling from the loss. On Thursday, the official cause of his death was revealed as lung cancer.

The actor’s representative on Monday revealed his demise, after a brief illness, at the age of 61. The agent on Thursday confirmed to Deadline that the actor passed away after battling lung cancer, which had been diagnosed a few months earlier.

Andre Braugher's acting legacy

The two-time Emmy Award winner is remembered lovingly for portraying the iconic character of Capt. Raymond Holt in the NBC-Fox sitcom and long-run police drama series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His sense of humor and comical timing in the series made him a fan favorite. He is also best known for NBC’s dark police drama series, Homicide: Life on the Street, where he played Detective Frank Pembleton.

NBC entertainment on Tuesday remembered Braugher as a passionate role model throughout the upcoming acting generations. “In addition to his prowess as a dramatic actor, his comedy chops were also on full display as the determined and passionate Capt. Holt in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ We will miss him tremendously,” read the statement.

Many Hollywood celebrities took to their social media handles to mourn the acclaimed actor and celebrate his legacy as a powerful black character in popular shows. Actors Chelsea Peretti, Mike Royce, and Terry Crews also expressed their intense sorrow on Braugher’s demise.

The 61-year-old actor won the prestigious Emmy Awards for NBC’s Homicide and FX’s Thief.

Apart from his splendid performance on TV, the actor also appeared in several films throughout his decades-long career - City of Angels, Frequency, Duets, The Mist, Poseidon, The Gambler, Primal Fear, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Salt.
