The feel-good movie also marks the second directorial of Prithviraj after the blockbuster Lucifer
If the pandemic didn’t happen, fans of Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran would have got the first glimpse of the much-awaited Empuraan, the sequel of the latter’s directorial debut Lucifer. While Empuraan is still a long way off, the superstar duo has another movie on the cards – Bro Daddy, which is completely different from Lucifer.
The teaser of the multi-starrer, which also has Kalyani Priyadarshan, Meena, Soubin Shahir, Unni Mukundan, Kaniha, Lalu Alex and Jagadish was revealed on New Year’s Eve and promises to be a feel-good family entertainer.
What is Bro Daddy’s story?
From what little we gathered from the film’s teaser, Mohanlal and Prithviraj play father and son name John Kattadi and Eesho John Kattadi, respectively, in the movie, which is scripted by Sreejith N and Bibin Malieckal. Meena plays John’s wife Annamma. Lalu Alex’s character Kurian reportedly was in love with Annamma but was chased away (by her father’s dog) during their college days. However, years later, Eesho is in love with Kurian’s daughter Anna (Kalyani Priyadarshan) and has a tough road ahead convincing her dad to get her married to him. Kaniha plays Anna’s mother in the movie, which also has Unni as Cyril and Soubin as Happy Pinto.
Recently, the team has been releasing promos from the movie, establishing its comedic tone and mood. Prithviraj also talked about the songs in the film and how they lend themselves to the story of the movie, which revolves around the Kattadi family - John Kattadi, Annamma and their son Eesho, played by Mohanlal, Meena and Prithviraj, respectively.
The movie's title song Vannu Pokum was released online recently. The track, rendered by Mohanlal and Prithviraj, is composed by Deepak Dev and evolves as a conversation between a father and a son. While the visuals of the song that were released featuring snippets from their recording session, the movie will have an animated featurette about a couple who get married at a young age and their son turning the pages of a flipbook that narrates their story.
When and where to watch Bro Daddy?
The movie, which was shot entirely in Hyderabad, will be a direct to OTT release. Mohanlal had confirmed this during the promotions of Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham. In an exclusive interview to OTTplay, the actor told us, ““It’s a feel-good entertainer. We enjoyed doing it. It’s a film that you cannot compare to Lucifer. If you shoot a humour-driven movie with visually-pleasing aesthetics, it comes out really well. In Malayalam, we haven’t done too many movies like that, again due to the budget. Also, when people think of Mohanlal-Prithviraj combination, Lucifer comes to their mind first and that generates an interest in the audience to watch Bro Daddy.”
The makers officially announced the movie will release on Disney+ Hotstar, making it Mohanlal’s second direct OTT release after Drishyam 2 dropped on Amazon Prime Video last February.
While the release date of Bro Daddy is yet to be announced officially, reports suggest that the movie will drop on the streaming platform on January 26.
