Bramayugam, the highly anticipated Mammootty-starrer, is set to release on February 15, 2024. The megastar is set to play the role of Kunjamon Potti in the movie.
Bramayugam, the upcoming period-horror thriller marks the first onscreen collaboration of megastar Mammootty and talented filmmaker Rahul Sadasivan. The much-awaited project has garnered the attention of cine-goers with its highly promising teaser and trailer. As reported earlier, the National award-winning actor is set to play a unique character named Kunjamon Potti in the film, which stars Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan in pivotal roles.
However, Bramayugam is now making headlines after the Punchaman family of Kerala’s Kottayam district filed a lawsuit against the film. The controversy is related to the name of Mammootty’s character in the upcoming Rahul Sadasivan directorial.
As per the latest reports, the Punchaman family has filed a lawsuit against the makers of Bramayugam, alleging that Mammootty’s character Kunjamon Potti is named after their ancestor (who is also called Punchaman Potti). In the lawsuit, the Punchaman family members have alleged that the veteran actor’s character is inspired by the real-life Kunjamon Potti, who was a highly skilled wizard, mentioned in the legendary Malayalam literary work, Aithihyamala.

In the lawsuit, they have alleged that Mammootty’s character in the film is someone who practices black magic and stated that it shows the family in a bad light. The Punchaman family members have requested the court to cancel the censor certification of Bramayugam, to prevent the film from releasing in theatres on February 15, Thursday. However, the makers of the period-horror thriller have not reacted to the allegations, yet.
For the uninitiated, the stories of real-life Kunjamon Potti and his unmatched skills are highly popular among Malayalam literature lovers. The tales of his friendship with Kadamattathu Kathanar, and the story in which he challenged goddess Bhadrakali, are quite legendary.

In a recent interaction with Radio Asia, director Rahul Sadasivan confirmed that Mammootty’s character in the movie has no connection with Aithihyamala’s Kunjamon Potti. For the uninitiated, the real-life character is best known among the masses for his appearance in the Kadamattathu Kathanar story. However, the megastar’s Kunjamon Potti is a fictional character, and Bramayugam revolves around a fictional story which is set in the end period of the 18th century. The movie is slated to be released in five languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
