Malhotra, who produced the upcoming film, is the CEO of DNEG, the visual effects company that has 6 Oscars to its name
Ayan Mukerji’s magnum opus, Brahmastra has found its place among one of the most hyped and anticipated releases of the year. Among its producers is Namit Malhotra, CEO of one of the most prominent VFX companies in the world, DNEG. The company has six Academy Awards to its name for its work in the films - Inception, Interstellar, Ex Machina, Blade Runner 2049, First Man and Tenet. Malhotra recently talked about whether Brahmastra, which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, can nab an Oscar next year for its visual effects.
In a conversation with ETimes, Malhotra said that he can rule out that possibility as ‘anything is possible’. The filmmaker said that his company had done other films which were ‘just as good’ like No Time to Die and Dune, but they were not nominated for an Oscar for visual effects.
Malhotra talked about how through Brahmastra, they were bringing to screens a story that had its origins in India, one that is not a copy of what has been done in the West before. Calling director Mukerji’s vision, ‘complicated and massive’, he said that the VFX team was trying to enable that vision with their respective duties.
He also added that when the film releases, he is sure people will appreciate it as they have done a film that speaks to Indian culture and people.
“In that regard, it's very exciting to be a part of it, and not just pushing innovation and high tech creative storytelling in the West, but also doing it in India,” he said.
The upcoming film, which also has Karan Johar as a producer, stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Dimple Kapadia and Mouni Roy.
Brahmastra is slated for release on September 9, 2022. The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
