Bougainvillea, the highly anticipated project directed by Amal Neerad, is gearing up for a grand theatrical release in October 2024. Kunchacko Boban and Jyothirmayi play the lead roles in the film, which stars Fahadh Faasil in a cameo appearance. The movie, touted to be a psychological thriller garnered attention with its recently released singles. Meanwhile, the netizens, who analyzed the second single ‘Maravikale’ suggest that Bougainvillea is inspired by the famous Malayalam novel, Ruthinte Lokam.

Bougainvillea is loosely based on Ruthinte Lokam?

The netizens, who watched the Bougainvillea's second single ‘Maravikale’ featuring Kunchacko Boban and Jyothirmayi, feel that the visuals have striking similarities with the premise of the popular novel, Ruthinte Lokam. The cinephiles, especially the Redditors, have been actively discussing the same. According to the readers who are familiar with the novel, the glimpses of the upcoming Amal Neerad directorial reminded them of Lajo Jose’s literary work.

Notably, the novelist is also a part of the Bougainvillea team, as the co-writer of the film. The titular character of Ruthinte Lokam, a young mother named Ruth, suffers from retrograde amnesia after meeting with a deadly accident. She lives with her husband, kids, and a house helper. However, things take a different turn after a few young women go missing from the city under mysterious circumstances, and Ruth becomes the prime suspect in the case.

Now, the Redditors point out that Jyothirmayi’s character, from what we have seen in the Maravikale song video, has striking similarities with Ruth. However, they also feel that director Amal Neerad has tweaked the plotline a little, as the promotional stills of the film feature more characters. Especially, the roles played by Fahadh Faasil and Sharaf U Dheen in the film reportedly seem the new additions. So, Bougainvillea could be just inspired by Ruthinte Lokam, not an accurate adaptation.
