“If a wall was the topic of contention in Pa Ranjith’s Madras, a cricket ground is one in Blue Star. Jayakumar does not leave the grip of the sports element in the film and honestly tries to balance the sportsmanship and the dirty business that elitism and casteism bring to the table,” reads OTTplay review of the film.
Blue Star is a period drama set against the backdrop of Arakkonam. The film follows two cricketing rivals, with undertones of casteism and classism. The film stars Ashok Selvan as Ranjith, a Dalit Christian and Shanthanu as Rajesh, a caste Hindu, and shows how they turn from foes to friends to battle oppression that has been placed on them. Others in the cast include Prithvi, Keerthi Pandian, Ilango Kumaravel, Lizzie Antony and others. While Govind Vasantha has composed the music, Selva RK is the editor. Thamizh A Azhagan has shot the film. The film marks the first collaboration between Keerthi and Ashok, who are husband and wife in real life.
“It is not based on a true story, but something that I have seen growing up. My childhood was filled with playing cricket, and each of the Blue Star characters is inspired by people around me and the matches we play,” said Jayakumar while speaking to OTTplay about making the film.
