Black Panther 3 has been a talk of the town for a while with no confirmed future in sight and turns out Hollywood legend Denzel Washington is now joining the franchise.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to thrive—with mutants joining the storyline, Deadpool & Wolverine earning over a billion, and Tom Holland gearing up for Spider-Man 4—some highly anticipated projects still have an uncertain future. One of these is Black Panther 3 which would carry on the Wakandan legacy with Letitia Wright’s Shuri taking up the Black Panther mantle following T’Challa’s passing. Fans are eager to see how the story will evolve, yet Marvel has been silent on this front. However, Denzel Washington has now confirmed he will enter the MCU, revealing that Ryan Coogler is actively working on the film.
The world was shaken by Chadwick Boseman’s passing, which left the role of Black Panther vacant. In a touching decision, Marvel Studios chose not to recast T’Challa, giving the character a final farewell in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Since then, there has been no official update on a follow-up film. But in a recent interview, Hollywood legend Denzel Washington confirmed he has a role in Black Panther 3 indicating that the project is moving forward. Here’s what we know so far.
In a conversation with Variety Washington discussed his career and his criteria for new projects, saying, “For me, it’s about the filmmakers. At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make—probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.”
He continued, “I played Othello at 22. I’m about to play Othello at 70 [in a Shakespeare production co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal that opens on Broadway in February 2025]. After that, I’m playing Hannibal. Then, I’ve been talking to Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. Then, I’ll be doing Othello then King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
This is a strong confirmation that Black Panther 3 is on track. However, Kevin Feige’s choice to keep the film absent from D23, Comic-Con, and other slate announcements suggests that it may not release until after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. It’s also possible that the movie could fill one of the vacant release dates for undisclosed projects. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates on this and everything else from the world of streaming and film.
