Marvel Studios has commenced production of the eagerly-awaited sequel to the phenomenal 2018 film, Black Panther, at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, US.

Director Ryan Coogler will return at the helm and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has confirmed that most of the original cast will be returning except for Chadwick Boseman, who died in August 2020 after a four-year-long battle with colon cancer.

Feige told Variety that even though it was an emotional time for the team without Boseman, everyone is “excited to bring the world of Wakanda back to the public. We’re going to do it in a way that would make Chad proud.”

While the plot remains under wraps and there is no confirmation from Feige regarding which actors will be coming back, it is safe to assume that Letitia Wright (Shuri), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Florence Kasumba (Ayo), Daniel Kaluuya (W’Kabi), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Winston Duke (M’Baku) and Angela Bassett (Ramonda) would reprise their roles.

When Black Panther opened in theatres, it broke all barriers including the notion that a film with a predominantly African American cast can never be a hit. It was also nominated for seven Academy Awards, including for the Best Picture, making it the first superhero movie to ever be recognised in that highly-coveted category. It won Oscars in several categories including Best score, production design and costume design.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is slated for a July 8, 2022 release, both in theatres and on the streaming giant Disney+, along with a web series set in the same world.
