The upcoming film will be based on the life of Birsa Munda, a 19th century tribal leader from Jharkhand who was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement
After etching a name for himself in Kollywood, filmmaker Pa. Ranjith is gearing up to take Bollywood by storm with his next project. The director is gearing up for his debut in the industry with his maiden Hindi film, one which also promises to tackle some hard-hitting themes. Ranjith’s next project will be Birsa, a biographical drama based on the life of the late prominent tribal leader, Birsa Munda. The project is expected to begin production by the end of the current year.
In a statement, the filmmaker opened up about the project, saying he is glad that he chose Birsa for his Bollywood debut. He said that it’s been an ‘enriching process’ to research for the film and pen its script, talking about how inspiring it was to trace the freedom fighter’s life and struggle for freedom.
The upcoming film will be produced by Shareen Mantri and Kishor Arora under the banner of Namah Pictures. Mantri also pointed out the ‘intense research’ put in for the film so that Munda’s story could be brought on to screens on a massive scale. Arora had called the freedom fighter’s story as one that ‘personified courage in every way’. It was also revealed that the film will be shot in several ‘unseen’ locations, deep in the jungles.
Munda, a Jharkhand native, is an important figure in the Indian independence movement. The tribal leader led a community movement in the 19th century against the British.
Meanwhile, Ranjith’s last directorial is the critically acclaimed Arya starrer, Sarpatta Parambarai, a sports drama, which was released on Amazon Prime Video.
