The upcoming movie also has Saiju Kurup and Athira Patel as part of its cast
The pandemic and the consequent restrictions have given rise to a category of films that have limited cast, crew and locations, but still tell a hard-hitting story that can keep the audience engaged. Director Rahul Sadasivan’s Bhoothakalam seems to follow that trend.
The movie, which has Shane Nigam, Revathy, Saiju Kurup, James Eliya and Athira Patel as part of its cast, is a thriller with a mystery at its core, as surmised from the trailer of the movie that was released a week ago. Scripted by Rahul and Sreekumar Shreyas, the film also has a stellar crew featuring composer Gopi Sundar, cinematographer Shehnad Jalal, production designer Manu Jagadh and Salam Bukhari as its project designer.
What is Bhoothakaalam about?
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the film’s director Rahul told us, “It’s got quite a unique combination – Revathy ma’am and Shane. We want to keep the genre a surprise, but it’s a story about a mother and a son with several surprising elements.”
Shane plays Vinu while Revathy stars as his mother and schoolteacher Asha in the film. After the death of their relative, Vinu, who is unemployed and considered a failure by those around him, begins to experience mysterious events in their house, forcing his mother to question his sanity.
Rahul had first approached Revathy for the role of Asha two years ago. Shane joined the cast early last year, when the movie went on floors amid the pandemic.
When and where to watch Bhoothakaalam?
The movie marks the second directorial of Rahul, who had earlier helmed the sci-fi drama Red Rain. Shane has also debuted as a singer and composer with the movie, rendering a track that he has written himself.
Bhoothakaalam, which is co-produced by Anwar Rasheed and Shane Nigam, is set to release directly on Sony LIV on January 21. The platform is also streaming Malayalam films such as Kaanekkaane, Madhuram and Churuli.
