A flashback reveals that Manjulika, the spirit everyone thinks has possessed Anjulika, is actually Anjulika herself, and not Manjulika. Manjulika, who practiced black magic, killed their father and used her power to hypnotise Anjulika to take over her life. So, it is actually Anjulika's spirit that seeks revenge throughout the movie, not Manjulika.

The eccentricities of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
This second installment of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise delves deeper into Manjulika’s backstory. It looks at her life as a dancer who falls in love with a prince, only to be heartbroken when her twin sister Anjulika becomes his chosen bride. Driven by jealousy, Manjulika’s turning to black magic and ultimately meeting a tragic end gives a wider explanation of Anjulika's becoming a ghost and her vengeful act, unlike the first installment.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has a common story that is dependent on a woman's conflict. The movie reinforces the idea that women who don't conform to societal expectations are evil and need to be controlled. The ghost represents everything that is wrong and is in need of being subdued and banished forever so that everyone's life can go back to normal.
