The actor called Happu’s character the highlight of his acting career.
Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! Earned its place as one of the most beloved sitcoms on Indian television today. Yogesh Tripathi became a household name for his witty portrayal of the quirky Happu Singh on the show. The actor recently opened up about the person in his life who he took inspiration from to play Happu.
In conversation with Pinkvilla, Yogesh called Happu’s character the highlight of his acting career and said he loved playing him. The character is that of a policeman and Yogesh had to wear a fake flab to resemble the potbelly of his character. The actor said that although he found it tiring to shoot for several hours wearing the fake belly, the hard work he put in felt worth it seeing the love and admiration he got from fans.
Yogesh spoke of how he had a teacher named Premchand Ji, who resembled Happu in many ways, including in physique and mannerisms. The actor said that he never imagined that he would get a chance to portray a character similar to his teacher in his career, after bidding adieu to his theatre days. Yogesh said he took inspiration from his teacher for the character both for Happu’s look and his mannerisms. “Although Premchand Ji is not here with us anymore, I have kept him alive through my character”, said Yogesh.
Yogesh’s character became so loved on the show that Happu even got his own show in the form of Happu Ki Ultan Paltan. The spin off series saw Yogesh reprise his role as Happu, and the series followed the policeman’s adventures with his family- consisting of his wife and nine children. Kamna Pathak, Himani Shivpuri, Sanjay Choudhary, Ashna Kishore and Zahara Sethjiwala also star.
