Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Loki Season 2, The Marvels

Marvel Studios' ambitious 2023 campaign saw six releases – three live-action films, a critically-acclaimed animated feature, a video game, and two series. However, the response wasn't universally positive, with some projects generating mixed reviews and sparking debate among fans.

Before diving into Marvel's powerhouse 2024 lineup, featuring blockbusters like Madame Web, Venom 3, Deadpool 3, and Kraven the Hunter, let's take a moment to rewind and reflect on the triumphs and tribulations of the year gone by. Their successes and lessons learned will undoubtedly fuel the excitement for the cinematic adventures to come.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

This sequel was released in May. It is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy. It is the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), and the thirty-second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film earned $845 million worldwide, and became the fourth highest-grossing film of 2023.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

This animated film was released in June. It features the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales aka Spider-Man. It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which is set in a shared multiverse of alternate universes called the Spider-Verse. This sequel is a box office success, with a collection of $690.5 million worldwide, and become the third-highest-grossing film of 2023.

The Marvels

This live-action film was released in November. It is the sequel of Captain Marvel (2019), a continuation of the television mini-series Ms. Marvel (2022), and the thirty-third film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film became the biggest disaster from Marvel of 2023 despite having the renowned South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon in the cast, with a collection of $277 million worldwide.

Loki Season 2

This Marvel series was released in October on Disney+ Hotstar. This second season sees Loki working with Mobius M. Mobius, Hunter B-15, and other members of the Time Variance Authority, who navigate the multiverse in order to find Sylvie, Ravonna Renslayer, and Miss Minutes. This series is also a blockbuster hit. The finale went out with a blast making 11.2 million global views over three-days.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

This live-action film was released in February. It is based on Marvel Comics featuring the characters Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Hope Pym/Wasp. This film is the sequel of Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), and the thirty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The sequel earned $359.3 million worldwide, and could be called a partial hit.

Secret Invasion

This Marvel mini-series was released in June on Disney+ Hotstar. It is the ninth TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It follows Nick Fury and Talos as they uncover a conspiracy by a group of shapeshifting Skrulls to conquer Earth. The mini-series has been another disaster from Marvel. It has got only 9 million views after one week of its release.

Spider-Man 2

After Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this game has become a major hit for Marvel. It has become the fastest selling video game on PlayStation in history. Released in October, this game lets you get to be Spider-Man, either Peter Parker or Miles Morales, and fight bad guys like Venom and Kraven to save New York City. It's a huge city to explore, with Brooklyn and Queens added in, and you can even switch between the two Spideys anytime you want.
