Nayakan is about an ordinary man who rises from being a slum dweller to an underworld don respected by many for his good nature. The film is said to be loosely inspired by the life of don Varadarajan Mudaliar and the American cult classic film The Godfather. Nayakan was released during Diwali in 1987 and became a commercial success as well as critically acclaimed. The film also won Kamal Haasan a National Film Award for Best Actor, apart from Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.
Nayakan also starred Saranya Ponvannan, Karthika, Janagaraj, Vijayan, MV Vasudeva Rao, Delhi Ganesh, Nizhalgal Ravi, Nassar and Tara in pivotal roles.
Cut to present, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan have collaborated once again for Thug Life, which is also said to be based on the life of a gangster. The film features a star ensemble, including Trisha, Silambarasan, Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Nasser, Abhirami, Gautham Karthik and others. Earlier, actors Jayam Ravi and Dulquer Salman were roped in to be a part of the movie but had to opt out due to their schedules.
