Tamil movies to stream on OTT.

Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj's latest movie Jigarthanda Double X is all set to arrive on streaming this week. The film is a spiritual sequel to the director's 2014 breakout film Jigarthanda. Similar to its predecessor, Jigarthanda Double X is also a meta-movie that offers an inside glimpse of the pains and pleasures of filmmaking.

Before Jigarthanda Double X's OTT release, here are the top five Tamil films with meta elements you can stream right now.

Iruvar (1997):

Iruvar is not just the best-ever film in director Mani Ratnam's career, but also one of the landmark works of art in the history of mainstream cinema. The film is loosely based on the struggling days of MG Ramachandran and M. Karunanidhi, who left a lasting impression both in the Tamil film industry and Tamil state politics. The film skillfully explores the intersection of politics and cinema, delivering powerful performances and a thought-provoking narrative.

Uttama Villain (2015):

In Uttama Villain, Kamal Haasan plays a superstar, whose talents are wasted in fan-pleasing movies. But, when he finds himself at the mercy of time, Kamal's Manoranjan races against the clock to make one final film that truly honours his talent. This was also K Balachander's last film before he passed away in 2014. With strong performances and thought-provoking themes, Uttama Villain is a cinematic journey that transcends traditional storytelling.

Uttama Villain is streaming on Zee5 and OTTplay Premium .

Mozhi (2007):

Director Radha Mohan's Mozhi revolves around Karthik (Prithviraj), who scores background scores for films. He falls in love with his neighbour Archana, played by Jyothika, a deaf and mute girl. The film beautifully explores the power of communication and the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. With a strong supporting cast and a touching narrative, Mozhi stands out as a heartwarming tale of love and understanding.

Tamizh Padam 2 (2018):

This list would be complete without director C. S. Amudhan's Tamizh Padam 2, a hilarious spoof film that satirizes idiosyncrasies of Tamil cinema with exceptional wit and humour. Shiva's comedic timing and clever writing make this film a laugh riot. By poking fun at cliches and stereotypes, Tamizh Padam offers a refreshing and entertaining take on the art of cinema.

Manmadan Ambu (2010):

In Manmadan Ambu, Trisha plays a leading movie star. While her professional life is thriving, her personal life is falling apart, thanks to her fiance (played by Madhavan), who assumes she is cheating on him with other actors. So he hires a private eye, played by Kamal Haasan, and sets in motion a chain of events that makes his worst fears come to pass. The film's strength lies in its well-crafted screenplay, which balances humour and emotion.
