Durga Puja is here. Traditionally, this is the time of the year when production houses release their big films to celebrate the festivity. This year, four big films, Srijit Mukherji’s Dawsham Awbotaar, Arun Roy’s Bagha Jatin, Arindam Sil’s Jongole Mitin Mashi, and Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s Raktabeej, will battle it out at the box office. In another month, the fate of Prosenjit Chatterjee, Dev, Koel Mallick, Srijit Mukherji, Abir Chatterjee, Arindam Sil, Shiboprosad Mukherjee, and others will be decided for this Puja.

In 2019, Arindam brought Koel Mallick as Mitin Mashi on the big screen. Now they are back. Based on Suchitra Bhattacharya’s novel, Jongole Mitin Mashi will also feature Subhrajit Dutta and others. Strength: Among all the other Puja releases, Jongole Mitin Mashi is the one that addresses the children. Remember the opening sequence of Byomkesh Pawrbo? A touch of that magic can make Jongole Mitin Mashi a nice watch. Weaknesses: Unlike Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s Byomkesh Bakshi and Feluda, Mitin Mashi’s popularity is limited and has little recall value for the audience above 35-40 years old. Also, the wildlife conservation appears a little preachy in the teaser and we hope it will be taken care of in the film. It is a noble idea but no one likes to hear gyan. Do they?

Opportunity: Mitin Mashi is back after a hiatus and this is the chance to make it a successful franchise. We barely have a Miss Marple-equivalent in Bengal and there is undoubtedly a dearth of good women detective characters. Mitin Mashi has the potential to attract young readers and viewers.

Threat: In a competition with Srijit’s Dawsham Awbotaar and Dev’s Bagha Jatin, Jongole Mitin Mashi may suffer from fewer shows at odd times. However, it will be our very special Durga Puja weekend and if the film clicks, it will take no time to bag more shows. All the best to the team!
