The Penguin

Ahead of another episode of The Penguin releasing on OTT, the makers have shared what went behind the making of the series. While doing so, the showrunner Lauren Lefranc explained how the series shows a contrast between the superhero Batman and the man perceived to be the supervillain, The Penguin, who is originally named Oswald Cobblepot and is now called Oz Cobb. Here's everything she and even actor Colin Farrell spoke about the series and the role…

Lauren Lefranc talks of disparity between Batman and Penguin being the central idea behind the series

The Penguin showrunner Lauren Lefranc, who brainstormed with Matt Reeves a lot, spoke about how they created Gotham not only as a city, but also as a character. "Oz is just a normal man who isn't underestimated," she explained of the villain from the DC comics. The Penguin is known to be greedy who wants more for himself. She further explained of trying to show the disparity in Gotham. "Batman is up high looking down at the city, but Oz is down on the ground looking up wanting to get up there (to the penthouse)," she explained about the idea behind the series. Lauren further explained how she tried to bring to the table the fact that Penguin doesn't just want power but also people's respect.

Executive producer Matt Reeves (yes, the same guy who directed Robert Pattinson's The Batman) was excited to tell a Gotham story through the series, The Penguin. He wished for the story to be a crime tapestry/saga.

On-screen Penguin aka Colin Farrell’s take on The Penguin

Colin Farrell, who plays the lead role of The Penguin, spoke about how he got the opportunity to 'really explore' Penguin's life and history. The latter, he explains, played a huge part in the unfolding of their tale. "It feels like a very human story," he shared. He also mentioned the story as bold, incredibly violent and extraordinarily dark.

What has happened in The Penguin so far

The Penguin begins with the fear of The Riddler. There's a lot of flooding in Gotham city, which makes it a disaster zone. The makers wished to explore both the sides of Gotham - of what the films portrayed as well as the dirty and less wealthy streets. The makers had reconstructed New York to look like Gotham. The drama unfolds the supervillain family, the Falcones, too.
