The actress talks about how social media impacts younger people’s life.
Billed as a story that upholds feminism, Arjunn Dutta’s Shrimati which features Swastika Mukherjee and Soham Chakraborty in lead is all to release on June 8. The film deals with how social pressure impacts a woman. The family drama also features Barkha Sengupta as Mallika – a well-heeled, high-society individual. In the film, her influence over Shrimati, aka Swastika, is a generic reflection of the social pressure that a woman faces in everyday life.
Barkha says that in today’s time, social media is making life more difficult. She further expresses that she is happy because a film like this is being made. “I am happy that Arjunn has picked a topic like this. These days, social media has become larger than life. It looks like we are always having a good time that is void of any loss, heartbreaks and so on,” says the actress. Elaborating on this she mentions that showing off has become a part of the social media culture. “Everyone is wearing nice clothes and holidaying in beautiful places. But that is not all about your life. We have pains and traumas,” says the actress.
Talking about her own social media account Barkha says that she tries to keep it as close to reality as possible. She also admits that the pressure becomes difficult in the case of actresses. “An actress is always expected to look and talk a certain way and post certain things. My Instagram is as close to my real life and I keep away from reel life. My posts are often with my daughter (Meira),” she explains.

Barkha also points out that the real problem is when people start believing that the life that is portrayed in cinema is how they live. “People around you believe that the image you portray is who you are. But that’s not all. You also start believing that the life you portray is who you are. And we lose touch with reality. It is quite a fight, more so for the younger generation. This film tries to break that,” says the actress.
