Greta Gerwig's film Barbie, based on the popular Mattel toy, is holding steady at the box office in India and abroad. The film, which released on July 21, has earned Rs 25 crore in India in six days and is still attracting the audiences with its quirky and empowering story.

According to trade portal Sacnilk, Barbie earned Rs 2.30 crore (nett) in India on its sixth day for all languages. This brings the net total of the fantasy film to Rs 25 crore at the India box office. The film had an overall occupancy of 12.34 per cent on Wednesday.

Barbie had a decent opening weekend in India with Rs 18.70 crore (nett) across 1500 screens. However, it faced tough competition from Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which opened to a massive Rs 55.15 crore (gross) in India in its first three days.

The film has received positive reviews from critics and audiences for its witty and whimsical story, charming performances and colorful visuals. Margot Robbie, who plays the titular role of Barbie, has been praised for her charismatic and comedic portrayal of the iconic doll who gets expelled from Barbieland for not being perfect enough.

The film also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken, Barbie's love interest, who joins her on an adventure in the real world. The film also features Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Zendaya in supporting roles.

Barbie is a live-action adaptation of the popular toy franchise that has been around since 1959. The film explores the themes of self-love, identity, diversity and feminism through a humorous and heartwarming lens.

Barbie has also performed well overseas, grossing $194.3 million from 70 markets for a worldwide total of $356.3 million against a $145 million production budget. It scored the biggest opening ever for a WB title in major markets, including Mexico ($22.3 million), Brazil ($15.9 million) and Australia ($14.6 million). The U.K. led with $22.9 million, the biggest showing for the studio since the pandemic.

Barbie clashed at the theatres globally with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer on July 21. However, Barbie has clearly emerged as a winner in terms of critical acclaim and female empowerment in international box office. However, in India, Oppenheimer is a clear winner.
