Barbie 2 happening? Greta Gerwig and WB throw cold water over hopes calling rumours inaccurate

The last two days have been wild for the fans of Barbie who have been excited to learn about a sequel in place but turns out there is none right now.

Warner Bros And Greta Gerwig Shoot Down Barbie 2 Rumours

The cinema of 2023 was globally defined by one clash or call it a battle between two gigantic movies which was labelled Barbenheimer. The clash between Oppenheimer and Barbie was the one that took home the trophy for making the most news and buzz across the world. It was Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie that managed to be called the winner and is till date the talk of the town. The movie that was helmed by Greta Gerwig is one of the most successful movies of this decade and there is no doubt Warner Bros would want to replicate that success with a sequel someday and rumors this week had that the studio is indeed discussing Barbie 2. But turns out Warner Bros, Greta, and her co-writer and husband Noah Baumbach have poured cold water over those hopes by shunning the rumors.

Barbie 2 Possibility Shot Down

For the unversed, Barbie that opened in theatres in July 2023 was a massive success. The movie managed to earn over a billion dollars at the global box office and has beaten Oppenheimer that was directed by Christopher Nolan. The movie, backed by WB, was about the Barbie Land that was touched by the real world when the Stereotypical Barbie and one of the most charming Kens came out in the real world and took home the traits from there. The movie was celebrated for celebrating womanhood and equality.

As per reports that surfaced on the internet this week, Warner Bros were allegedly discussing Barbie 2 with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. It was said that the filmmaker duo already have a storyline that they want the sequel to have and they even discussed it with the studio. While there is no confirmation whether the storyline was finalized or not, it certainly did kickstart a conversation.

However, now as per ComicBook reports, Warner Bros, Greta Gerwig, and Noah Baumbach representatives have now shunned all these rumors and dismissed the possibility of Barbie 2 at the moment. The studio has called the rumors about the sequel inaccurate and reps to Noah and Greta stated that "there is no legitimacy to this reporting." While Baumbach is busy finishing his untitled Netflix movie starring Gerwig, Adam Sandler, and George Clooney, Greta has Chronicles of Narnia adaptation in her kitty.

In addition to Robbie and Gosling, Barbie’s starry ensemble includes America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, John Cena, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ariana Greenblatt, Michael Cera, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Dua Lipa, and Helen Mirren. Barbie scored eight Oscar nominations and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the Billie Eilish track What Was Made For.
