Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the leads, Barbie is the most successful movie of 2023 and is backed by Warner Bros.
Amid all the big tentpole films and men ruling them with their towering presence, came a movie that spoke of feminism and painted the world with pink, breaking box office records and becoming the most successful film of 2023 with a billion-dollar box office haul. Great Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie in the lead, was a movie touted for a niche audience when it was announced and it turned out to be a winner when it was released. While many have already argued about its merit, rumours have it that there is still a Barbie 2 and a Ken spin-off at work. But is it true?
What is the update?
The chatter for the longest time now has that Warner Bros. who backed Barbie, are now working on Barbie 2 with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. If that wasn’t enough, the reports also said that the studio is planning to give Ryan Gosling’s Ken his own spin-off. Margot Robbie, in her latest Variety interview, has addressed the same. She said, "It's funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel. I don't think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn't designed to be a trilogy.”
"Everything went into Barbie, and that's how Greta works," Margot Robbie continued. "She finishes every movie empty, feeling like she could never make another movie because she put everything she had into that one. So I don't know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us. I think Warners would also agree. I don't know what more could even look like. We want to make more films that have the effect that Barbie has. I don't know if it has to be Barbie 2. Why can't it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that."
About Barbie:
Written by Greta with her husband and co-writer Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), Barbie is a modern take on the iconic doll. The movie is about her liberation and Ken’s realisation is in reverse order. Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the movie tackles the conversations and taboos around being a woman. The film when it was released was lapped up by the critics and most of the audience members but some rejected it outright, saying it was too in your face.
Barbie at the Box Office:
When it was released, Barbie clashed with Christopher Nolan’s ambitious film, Oppenheimer. Even with competition as tough as that, it was the Margot Robbie starrer who came out victorious. However, one must also consider that the Nolan directorial was A-rated. The movie in a monstrous haul earned $1.4 billion at the global box office, out of which $636 million was earned at the domestic market.
