The official Amy Winehouse biopic is almost here, produced by Monumental Pictures and StudioCanal, with the approval of The Amy Winehouse estate, and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Back to Black is Amy Winehouse’s official biopic. The Winehouse Family signed a deal with Monumental Pictures, who later teamed up with StudioCanal to produce the film. The film shall be theatrically distributed in the United States by Focus Features. The film dropped its official trailer an hour ago and it certainly looks promising.

Release date and trailer of Back to Black

Back to Black will be having a theatrical release in UK cinemas on April 12, 2024, while hitting the US theatres on May 17, during peak summer season . Directed by Sam Tylor-Johnson of Fifty Shades of Grey fame, the film’s screenplay was written by Matt Greenhalgh, who had collaborated with the former previously on Nowhere Boy.

Starring Marisa Abela in the role of Amy Winehouse, the trailer shows Jack O’Connell as the iconic singer’s future ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, while her mother Janis is played by Juliet Cowan, her father Mitch essayed by Eddie Marsan, and her grandmother Cynthia portrayed by Lesley Manville.

The contents of the trailer of Back to Black

The trailer traces Amy’s rise to fame, right from her early days of practicing guitar and living on the streets of Camden to becoming a North London jazz musician to becoming a renowned and prolific singer-songwriter. But the biopic also follows her epic love story as well as tragic life, that culminated in the groundbreaking album Back to Black, which became UK’s second best-selling album of the 21st century in 2011 and sold over 16 million copies worldwide.

The trailer maintains a balance following the coming-of-age and peak of Amy Winehouse as well as her downward spiral, that eventually resulted in her untimely demise in 2011.
