Interestingly, many filmmakers tried to adapt Winehouse's life story after her death in July 2011, but none of their efforts were successful. The announcement of a contract to produce a film chronicling Winehouse's life and career came from her estate in 2018. StudioCanal approved the production in July 2022, and the filming began in London from January to April 2023.
Despite mixed reviews, the $51 million it has made globally speaks for itself.
Filmmakers had several ideas for a biopic about Winehouse after her 2011 death, including one in 2015 starring Noomi Rapace, but nothing ever came of it.
The announcement that Winehouse's estate had inked an agreement to produce a biopic about her life and career came in October 2018. According to Deadline Hollywood's report in July 2022, StudioCanal was reportedly developing a film called Back to Black. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the film, while Matt Greenhalgh wrote the script. Monumental Pictures co-founders Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Nicky Kentish-Barnes served as producers.
From Universal Music Group and Sony Music Publishing, Back to Black incorporates numerous songs by Winehouse, which Abela sings while the film is in progress. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composed the film's score, while Giles Martin produced it.
